    Lenovo WA5480 G3

Lenovo WenTian WA5480 G3 is a 4U dual-socket AI server supporting 4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. PCIe GPU options include eight-GPU switched, eight-GPU direct and four-GPU direct configurations. Validate GPU models, expansion, storage, networking and cooling against the selected module and complete bill of materials.

    • Up to two 4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors; validate cooling requirements
    • 32 DDR5 DIMM slots; capacity and speed depend on CPU and memory population
    • PCIe GPU: eight-GPU switched, eight-GPU direct or four-GPU direct; selected modules expand to ten double-width cards
    • 24 2.5-inch or 12 3.5-inch bays; NVMe quantity depends on backplanes and topology
    • OCP 3.0 and PCIe networking; adapter and link speed require compatibility validation
    • 4U rack; four hot-swap CRPS power supplies; redundancy and cooling depend on configuration

Published model specifications describe available options, not the delivered configuration.

    Specifications & selection notes

    Processor

Model4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (Sapphire Rapids / Emerald Rapids); validate the supported configuration
    Slot count2
Maximum core countUp to 64 cores per processor across the series; CPU and configuration dependent
Maximum frequency / TDPFrequency and TDP depend on the CPU part number and cooling configuration; maxima do not apply to every configuration

    Memory

    TypeDDR5 RDIMM
    Slot count32 DIMM(Per socket 16 Units · 8 Channels × 2 DIMM)
Maximum capacityValidate against the CPU, DIMM part numbers and configuration guide; slot count alone does not establish a supported capacity
Data rateDepends on the CPU, DIMMs and DIMMs per channel; confirm the applicable configuration guide

    Storage

Front drive bays24 2.5-inch or 12 3.5-inch bays; this does not mean all 24 bays support NVMe
Interface typeSAS/SATA/NVMe depend on the backplane; the brochure lists up to 12 NVMe drives for the 24-SFF arrangement and up to four for the 12-LFF arrangement
RAIDOnboard SATA software RAID 0/1/5/10; optional PCIe RAID/HBA, with levels determined by the controller
M.2Optional internal M.2 SATA/NVMe boot devices; confirm quantity, adapter and RAID capability for the configuration

    Expansion and networking

    PCIe SlotsPCIe 5.0 × Multi-socket,Supports High-speed interconnect
GPU TopologyPCIe expansion: eight-GPU switched, eight-GPU direct or four-GPU direct; selected modules support up to ten double-width GPUs, not a blanket SXM full-interconnect configuration
NetworkingOCP 3.0 and PCIe network-adapter options; validate speed, protocol and slot allocation against the supported configuration
ManagementOne 1GbE RJ45 management port; Lenovo BMC and associated management software

    Power supply

Power supply ratingBrochure lists 1600W/2200W/2700W/3200W CRPS options; select supported power supplies for the actual configuration
RedundancyFour hot-swap power supplies with an N+N option; validate usable redundancy against system load and power-supply configuration
CoolingConfirm the actual air- or liquid-cooling configuration; liquid cooling is not assumed for every delivered configuration

    Chassis

    Specifications4U Rack mount(GPU Dedicated)
ManagementLenovo BMC and associated management software; dual BIOS/BMC flash images

    Operating system

SupportsMicrosoft, SUSE, Red Hat, VMware and Ubuntu; validate exact releases and AI software licensing separately

    View all model FAQs
Why is GPU count alone insufficient when choosing a WA5480 G3 topology?

The brochure lists direct, Balance and Common CPU-GPU connectivity, with separate expansion arrangements for 8-GPU switched, 8-GPU direct and 4-GPU direct configurations. Equal GPU counts need not mean equal connectivity. Validate the whole topology against the workload, networking and accelerator form factor.

Do 12-large-drive and 24-small-drive WA5480 G3 variants have the same NVMe support?

No. The technical table separately lists 12 3.5-inch and 24 2.5-inch bays, with different NVMe counts and motherboard/PCIe Switch connectivity. Validate the actual cages, backplanes and topology, and confirm internal M.2 boot drives separately.
